The Version 3.0 rollout is now complete. All production nodes
http://www.planet-lab.org/db/nodes/index.php?all
are now either running Version 3.0, are currently re-installing,
or have been temporarily deactivated because they do not meet the
updated hardware requirements
http://www.planet-lab.org/consortium/hardware.php
The Operations team remains busy supporting problematic re-installs,
and hopes to achieve normal node availability before the holiday break.
To recap, Version 3.0 is not dramatically different from Version 2.0
from the perspective of the slice, but a few changes are worth
highlighting. Slices are now installed with a minimal Fedora Core 2
(http://www.fedora.us/) distribution, CPU and disk limits are now in
place and enforced, and safe raw sockets have been deprecated. Much
of the backend code has been re-implemented to support resource
allocation and new hardware.
I would like to thank all members of the community for their patience
and assistance during the upgrade, as well as the members of the
Operations team for an outstanding job supporting the rollout. As
expected, unexpected problems delayed the completion of the rollout,
but with the help of a several PlanetLab users and developers, the
problems were overcome relatively quickly.
During the next few weeks, we will be updating documentation on the
website to reflect V3 changes. You can help by contributing or
updating documentation on the Wiki

and by becoming an active member of the users at lists.planet-lab.org
mailing list

Please continue to provide the development team with feedback and
bug reports about V3. If you have specific information about a bug,
including how to reproduce it, file a bug report by e-mailing
devel at planet-lab.org with as much information as you can provide.
If your request is more operational in nature, e-mail
support at planet-lab.org. When in doubt, e-mail support at planet-lab.org
for assistance.
