Sounds like your solution of having the user provide their login/passwd 
info is the right way to get slice->node associations.

Why does SWORD need to know slice->node associations?  Also, you 
mentioned that SWORD does not work.  Is it mainly an issue of porting it 
to the new API or is there something lacking in the new API that SWORD 
gleaned from slices.xml?
