[Planetlab-devel] Kernel Update

Hi,
We need to make a small update to the kernel for Thom Haddow's tun/tap
patches to work. The change enables the legacy tun/tap module and our
multiplexing tun/tap module to coexist.

Normally, one would reboot the nodes into the new kernel. However, rebooting
PL nodes is usually not benign and typically brings the node count down by
~5%, since a lot of nodes do not come back up after the reboot. So my
proposal is as follows. For updates that are restricted to kernel modules,
we simply copy the currently deployed tag to a special 'update tag,' which
updates the kernel image and modules but does not reboot at the end. The
spec file for the kernel would need to be modified to detect such tags and
to omit the reboot after installation.

If you have any thoughts about this, or suggestions for an alternative
approach, then kindly respond.

Sapan
