The latest e1000e chipset requires the igb driver from intel. The
e1000 and e1000e driver does not work with the latest e1000e chipset
(go figure). Our production kernel is currently based on 2.6.22,
which does not have the igb driver. This driver was introduced in
2.6.25. I've done a prelim port of the igb driver, but it crashes our
kernel after a while. Not sure it is worth the effort to debug this,
as we are working on a 2.6.27 based kernel w/ all PL/VINI features.
We are picking 2.6.27 because last time I checked it appeared like it
would be the base kernel for the future Redhat Enterprise Linux 6.x
release in Q2 or Q3 of 2010. Our strategy is to align our efforts
such that we can migrate from our legacy Fedora 8 to CentOS 6 and from
then on NEVER EVER have hardware/driver problems again, as all
hardware vendors together with RedHat make sure that their new server
hardware with RHEL.
