[Planetlab-users] offline nodes

We have recently redefined the status of "failed" nodes based
on how long they've been down and how hard we've worked to get
them back up (e.g., how many emails we've sent to the PI and
tech contact). Take a look at

     http://monitor.planet-lab.org/

to see the current number of reachable, unreachable, and offline
nodes.

The set of unreachable nodes is to be expected. Nodes fail, some
action is taken, and they eventually come back up. It's the offline
nodes that are problematic. Think of this list as our Hall-of-Shame.

Please take a look to see if one of your machines is on this list.
Bug your tech contact or PI to get your nodes back online, or take
it upon yourself to fix the problem. If you have under-provisioned
or failed nodes, please replace them. PlanetLab hardware does need
to be renewed from time to time. If you're fighting with your local
IT people about unblocking your nodes, please make them understand
that keeping these nodes on-line is the cost of your being able to
use PlanetLab for your research. Let us know if you need help making
your case.
